It's one thing to be overprotective and class-conscious, but as Pam, Devine takes these traits into the realm of the sociopath. On the surface, this is about blue collars versus tennis whites, but most of the problems between the families have nothing to do with class struggle - the mothers act as if they've never been forced to meet new people before. Several months later, they're planning a lavish wedding. She makes a promise to God that she'll stay chaste until she meets the right man, and almost immediately she has a “meet-cute” with Jason Taylor (Laz Alonso), a perfect gentleman. At the outset, Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) has just spent the night with yet another loser and is sick of that morning-after feeling. Because black slaves were not allowed to get married, a couple would commit by jumping over a broomstick together.

Jakes (who makes a cameo appearance), the title comes from a tradition rooted in slavery. The film's comedy is fueled by secrets, lies and impolitic revelations by insensitive parents, and if it weren't for some appealing performances that pull the film out of the fire, “Jumping the Broom” would surely jump the shark. Presenting a strong case for elopement, “Jumping the Broom” centers on a couple who could start out life fresh and easy if their respective families weren't rife with basket cases.
